Discourse Analysis 2

Discourse Analysis mentioned in chapter 8 focuses not on separate themselves, but on the sites of production and audience in the social modality of the image. So it is not the actual details in the image that is important but instead the classification and institution the image is placed in. There are two ways that the institutions work. One is through their apparatus which is the architecture, regulations, laws, and similar things. The second is technology are different in that they are techniques used to practice the power associated with the apparatus. Once again, a lot of research is devoted to the studying of text and images related to the subject.

Both Discourse Analysis are similar in that most of the research is devoted to collecting a bunch of similar images or institutions in a way to understand how it affects the power and message of the image. The first Discourse however concerns itself with the actual and similar images and the iconography and intertextuality that comes up with research and the power it has on the viewer. The second Discourse is more concerned with the site of production and audience and not the image itself. It explores how images are presented to the audience through the use of architecture and technology. Likewise, it also includes the labels and written text on the image as well. Discourse Analysis by itself can not help determine the meaning behind an image, only the space in which it is presented.

My viewing of my image is different because it because it is being shown as an image placed into a text document. Thus it is not be shown as in photo of a particular scene captured by a camera, but instead as an image being talked about. The original location of the image was an art website meant to show different peoples works. In that site, it takes on a different look in that the setup of the website is meant present the images as a work to observe and possible critique. It takes center stage in the original location, while here in the text document it is secondary to what is being written.
